The Paste of Haldi
Usually, you will find the Haldi in a powdered form, but since it will be applied over the bodies of the groom and bride during the Haldi ceremony, there is the need to make it into the paste form. The Haldi is usually done prior to the wedding, although it can come on the wedding morning. The ceremony is held in the homes of both the groom and the bride. This is because the bride & the groom are not expected to be together before the wedding.
The essential ingredients, include turmeric powder “Haldi”,water or rose water & sandalwood powder. Every household has their own concoction of how they make the haldi paste.

Rituals of the Haldi Ceremony
The couples relatives are expected to apply the Haldi paste on the bodies of the couple using mango leaves or even their bare hands. There are five body parts on which the paste must be applied, including the face, neck, hands, arms, feet, and knees. There are certain traditional songs related to the ritual and the family members sing these songs as the ceremony is going on. Family members, one after the other, will place a small portion of the Haldi paste on the couple for cleansing while showering them with blessings.
The couple may also apply some of the paste upon the siblings and friends who are unmarried. The Haldi powder is believed to be powerful enough to bring the unmarried folks a partner in no time. This part of the ceremony depends on the customs of the people and is fun. Finally, the members of the family of the couple wash away the Haldi which leaves an instant glow.
