GRANTHI BANDHANAM | INDIAN WEDDING CEREMONY
Granthi Bandhanam
While the Mangalsutra is considered as a ceremony of tying the knots between the couple, GranthiBandhanam on the other hand symbolizes the union between the two families; that of the bride and the groom. To commence the GranthiBandhanam, the Bride’s brother knots a white piece of cloth to the Bride’s sari. The other end of the fabric is then pulled over the Groom’s shoulder. After this, the Varmala, a garland made of cotton is placed around the couple’s necks. The garland contains no knots which is supposed to symbolize a smooth relationship without any frictions or breakages. Sometimes, the varmala garland is made of a gold threaded string instead of the white piece of cotton.
While the GranthiBandhanam is meant to indicate the bond between the couple’s families, it is also symbolic of a cordial connection between the bride and groom themselves. The thin of the white fabric is believed to show a bonding of the couple’s body, mind, and soul. Also, it is taken to symbolize the couple coming together to strengthen their characters and virtues.
Upon the completion of the GranthiBandhanam, the next wedding rite is either the MangalFera ceremony or the Saptapadi, which one comes next depends on the part of India where the couples choose to draw their traditions from.
